On this day 85 years ago, the football team avenged an early season 6-6 tie with a 46-0 bludgeoning of Winnwood. In the first match-up “Stony Brook seemed to lack pep,” according to the account in Res Gestae 1930, something the boys had no problem with in the rematch.
On Winnwood’s opening drive, the Brooker defense pushed them back 18 yards to set the tone for the afternoon. On Stony Brook’s ensuing possession they led a charge down the field, resulting in a Bob Glover score, punctuated by a Warren Hershey extra point. Captain Roddy Myers was the catalyst on the next drive, almost single-handedly carrying the Blue and White offense before crossing the goal line. Before the half was over, Myers would score again to give Stony Brook a commanding lead.
As the second half began, the unrelenting Brooker offense continued its onslaught as Myers found Charlie Pateman for the score. Before the contest was over, Ed MacKenzie would score twice to cap a great season finale for the boys. While the offense was churning all afternoon, the defense was equally effective in limiting a fast Winnwood squad, preventing them from gaining a single first down.
