In the Section XI Division Championships held at Sunken Meadow State Park yesterday, the cross country squads turned in some of their best performances of the season, despite the damp conditions. In the team qualifier (separate from the individual championship) freshman Miranda Harrigan placed 11th overall and first in Division IV in a time of 21:51. If you took an aggregation of the two varsity races run on the day, Harrigan’s time placed her 67th out of 354 runners and 12th among all freshmen.
Harrigan’s teammates also placed well in Division IV: Anna Brummeler (12th/24:48), Lely Garner (17th/25:42), Nicole Gray (20th/25:56), Danielle Sivertsen (37th/29:37), Alma Rojas (38th/29:47), and Kelly Campbell (42nd/30:33). Their team score was good enough for 3rd in the Division, ahead of Port Jefferson, Babylon, Hampton Bays, and Southold.
The boys also placed well in their team qualifier. Jacob Brummeler came through in 6th place in 18:39, his best time ever at Sunken Meadow. He was followed by Luis Irias (31st/20:49), John Desan (41st/21:51), Matt Wong (45th/22:12), Hyun Cho (54th/23:14), Harrison Plhak (55th/23:24), and Tion Wong (60th/24:29).
Next up for the squads is the Section XI Championship, back at the Meadow on October 31.
