The 1987 Shrikes
The 1987 Shrikes

On this day 27 years ago, the football team withstood a furious push from Lutheran to pull out a narrow victory.

Clinging to a 7-6 lead, the Shrikes used a courageous goal line stand in the waning moments of the game to hang on for the win against a much larger opponent. The team had just three players that weighed in at over 150 pounds, yet had enough toughness to repel Lutheran when it mattered most.

Stony Brook's goal line defense stuffed Lutheran from the three-yard line with 1:30 left in the game. Stony Brook's winning drive in the second quarter began at its own 32 and was capped by Jordan Nixon's toss to Glenn Rustay.
