On This Day In History | 1987
On this day 27 years ago, the football team withstood a furious push from Lutheran to pull out a narrow victory.
Clinging to a 7-6 lead, the Shrikes used a courageous goal line stand in the waning moments of the game to hang on for the win against a much larger opponent. The team had just three players that weighed in at over 150 pounds, yet had enough toughness to repel Lutheran when it mattered most.
Stony Brook’s goal-line defense stuffed Lutheran from the 3-yard line with 1:30 left in the game. Stony Brook’s winning drive in the second quarter began at its own 32 and was capped by Jordan Nixon’s toss to Glenn Rustay.
