Girls’ Soccer Shows Resilience in Debut
Yesterday, in the heat of a late summer afternoon, the girls soccer team began its defense of its County Championship in a scrimmage vs. Bellport. From the outset the offense was in attack mode and put the Clippers back on their heels in the opening eight minutes, but the tide swung in favor of Bellport after a few defensive breakdowns allowed some easy goals for the visitors. For a time it looked like the girls were deflated, but they showed their mettle by continuing to push the accelerator on offense, finishing with a strong second half.
There were several bright spots on the afternoon. Sydney Dunn and Julia Shi flew around the defensive backfield, playing with grit and aggressiveness. Emma Lavery played a very physical game at midfield. Morgan and Emily Pius controlled the wings at forward and put a number of gorgeous crosses into the scrum in front of the goal. The highlight of the afternoon was beautiful goal off the head of Annie Skorobohaty, courtesy of a fantastic ball by Emily Pius from the right wing.
Today’s game revealed some weaknesses, but that is why you play scrimmages. The bright side is that the girls outplayed the Clippers for long stretches of the game and there is a ton of talent on that field.
The girls are back in action on Tuesday, September 9th as they open the season at home vs. Mercy @ 4:30pm.
