Conversations: Khoren Lawson ’11

May 9, 2011

There have been a number of exceptional runners in the history of Stony Brook track and field and Khoren Lawson is listed among them. By the time this senior graduates in 19 days his name will be peppered throughout the record books. He holds the top mark in the 55 meters (6.58), the 60 meters (7.16), the indoor triple jump (44′ 3.25″), the outdoor triple jump (44′ 2.5″), the FAT 100 meters (11.06), and is the first leg on the newly minted school record-holding 4×100 meter relay team (43.07). In this past winter’s New Balance Indoor Nationals, he finished 7th in the nation in the Emerging Elite 60 meter dash and 4th in the Emerging Elite triple jump against some of the best talent from across America. His outstanding winter season earned him All-State recognition, a first in winter track history for both him and teammate Taylor Colucci.

Aside from his exploits on the track, Lawson also earned All-League recognition in helping to lead the soccer squad to a playoff berth. Off the track he serves as the Johnston Hall Prefect and is likely the fastest flutist in America, but you would never hear about any of these impressive honors from Khoren. He may be one of the fastest to have ever worn the blue and white, but his humility will mask that fact. He has an infectious joy for life and is beloved by his teachers and peers. As Khoren moves on to the University of Southern California next fall, we will miss him, but with the knowledge that he will continue to excel on the track and off.

What is your favorite memory from your SBS athletic career?

My favorite memory was an away meet versus Center Moriches. In the 4×100 relay, Kenny [Ruddick] and I dropped the baton during the first exchange yet we were still able to come back and win the race.

What do you hope to accomplish in your final season for the Bears in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and triple jump?

I hope to set the record in each event to say, “I was the best in these events when I left Stony Brook.”

Do you have any interesting pre-race rituals?

I listen to dubstep.

As you place your feet into the starting blocks, what is going through your mind?

Depends. If I’m at a big invitational with a lot of fast guys I honestly am just like, “Please God, let me keep up with them.” Then my mind wonders off about food or something.

What athlete did you want to be like when you were growing up?

My father, all the way.

If you could hang out with anyone who would you choose?

My deceased grandmother.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

Romans 12:12: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”

If you could be any animal which one would you be?

Keyboard Cat. He’s my homeboy.
