2011 Penn Relays Preview

April 28, 2011

The Bears will once again take the track at Franklin Field

The 2011 Penn Relays, the 117th annual since 1895, begin this morning in Philadelphia.  This year our boys 4×100 meter and 4×400 meter relay teams will continue the great Stony Brook tradition of running in the world’s premier relay carnival as part of 3,241 relay teams from 1,027 different high schools.  The 4×100 team of Khoren Lawson, Jon Wentling, Andrew White and Taylor Colucci will compete Friday morning with the first 4×100 heats going off at 10:40am.

The 4×400 meter relay team of Marco Masakayan, Khoren Lawson, Jon Wentling and Taylor Colucci will run on Saturday morning at 10:55am against a field at once foreign and familiar.  They will compete against schools from 4 states outside of New York alongside 3 other Long Island schools:

  1. Transit Tech (Brooklyn, NY) | 3:26.33
  2. Lakewood (Lakewood, NJ) | 3:51.75
  3. Tappan Zee (Orangeburg, NY) | 3:48.50
  4. Tallwood (Virginia Beach, VA) | 3:28.67
  5. North Babylon (North Babylon, NY) | 3:38.84
  6. Port Jefferson (Port Jefferson, NY) | 3:35.94
  7. Bay Shore (Bay Shore, NY) | 3:33.50
  8. The Stony Brook School (Stony Brook, NY) | 3:33.33
  9. Pocono Mountain West (Pocono Summit, PA) | 3:37.29
  10. West Potomac (Alexandria, VA) | 3:36.51
  11. Friendship-Edison Collegiate (Washington, DC) | 3:34.40
  12. Shamokin (Coal Township, PA) | 3:32.50
  13. Oakland Mills (Columbia, MD) | 3:30.43
  14. Chambersburg (Chambersburg, PA) | 3:35.0

The 4×400 meter relay team will look to rewrite some milestones from teams past:

  • The last time a team medaled: 2005 (3rd)
  • The last time a team won: 2004 (Justin Song, Louis Gabel, Dan Hickey & Christian Francis)
  • The last time a team ran under 3:30: 1988 (3:27.2)
  • The last time an individual ran a sub-51 second leg: 2002 (Will Lingle, 50.7)
