The Bears | Heinsohn (#1) & Hanchett (2nd row, 2nd from left)

On this day 20 years ago, the boys’ lacrosse team captured the 3rd Annual Bear Shootout, winning their own tournament for the second year in a row. After defeating Poly Prep, 7-1, the day before behind five goals from Matt Bell, the Brook claimed the title with a 9-5 triumph over Jamaica High School.

The boys drew first blood against the Beavers when Jason Shearon found the back of the net, but Jamaica finished the half on a 3-0 run to take the lead into the break. Alex Radin opened the third quarter with a goal, courtesy of a pass from James Hagn. Bell followed with consecutive unanswered goals to give the Bears a 4-3 edge. Toby Hanchett notched two of the Bears’ four 4th quarter goals to put the game away as the Blue and White outscored their opponents, 7-2, in the second half. Bell was named the tournament MVP as he scored 3 goals, eight overall in the tournament, and won 15-of-16 faceoffs against the Beavers. Hanchett finished with 3 goals and an assist and Ben Heinsohn turned away 5 shots in net. Bell, Hanchett, Heinsohn and Chris Lunati were all named to the All-Tournament team.

Tournament MVP Matt Bell scored two unanswered goals early in the third quarter to give Stony Brook a 4-3 lead in its 9-5 win over Jamaica in the final of the Stony Brook Tournament.
