Dunleavy & Amherst Win National Championship!

March 20, 2011

Kristyn Dunleavy ’07 and the Amherst College women’s basketball team made program history yesterday evening as they defeated Washington University (St. Louis) 64-55 to win the 2011 Division III NCAA Championship.  The Lord Jeffs exorcised some demons in the process as they vanquished a team that last season snapped their 31-game winning streak, ousting them in the national semifinals.

Dunleavy is not Stony Brook’s only collegiate National Champion as she joins fellow alums:

  • Robin Lingle ’60 | University of Missouri | Indoor Track | 1965
  • Ann Marie Wycoff ’85 | West Point | Swimming | 1987, 1988 & 1989
  • Jake Kenney ’96 | Princeton University | Lacrosse | 1997 & 1998
  • Derek Kenney ’98 | University of Virginia | Lacrosse | 1999
  • Liam Banks ’98 | Syracuse University | Lacrosse | 2000
  • Caitlin Banks ’00 | University of Virginia | Lacrosse | 2004
  • Nathan Kenney ’01 | University of Virginia | Lacrosse | 2003
  • Greg Titus ’03 | Salisbury University | Lacrosse | 2004, 2005, 2007 & 2008
  • Thomas Payne ’08 | United States Naval Academy | Boxing | 2010

Kristyn Dunleavy ’11 and Courtney Long ’11 combined for 811 points and 247 assists in their four years as essential components of Amherst’s recent success.
