On this day 17 years ago, Jonas Fischer turned in a performance for the ages with a 50-point effort on Shelter Island in a 100-70 victory for the Bears. It is still only the second time in school history that a boys’ basketball player has reached the half-century mark, the first coming on February 15, 1978 when Dave Wilson poured in 54 in his final game. As you might imagine, Fischer began to find the rim quickly as he netted 12 in the opening frame that the Bears took, 25-16. He slowed down a bit in the second quarter with 7 points, but Matt Mattimore picked up the slack with 9 as the Bears won the quarter 25-9 to take a commanding 50-34 halftime lead. Fischer dropped in 9 points in the third frame to give him an impressive 28 through three quarters, but not even he could have imagined what would transpire in the final eight minutes.

Fischer caught fire in the fourth quarter, scoring a remarkable 22 points that caused the Stony Brook student manager to begin utilizing the margins of the scorebook. Incredibly, Fischer did not register a point in the fourth until 5:33 remained, but once he began the Indians were powerless to stop him. He scored 12 of the Bears’ 14 points from the 5:33 mark to the 2:56 mark. He scored again with 2:06 left, hit a 3-pointer with 1:01 remaining, scored with 48 seconds left, and then drilled a 3-pointer with 26 seconds on the clock to give him an amazing 50 on the game.

Coach Mike Hickey remembered both Fischer and this particular game fondly. He recalled how Fischer asked out of the game for a breather in the final frame, the only time he had ever done so, until Hickey mentioned that he had 44 points. After hearing the number, Fischer got a second wind, stayed in the game, and had one of the most memorable performances in Stony Brook Athletics history. Coach Hickey still jokes that Fischer and Cori Cass, who guarded each other during the game, made some kind of deal prior to tip off. That fact that Cass scored 37 in the game may help support such a claim.

The islanders must have been thoroughly tired of Fischer since just three days earlier he had dropped in 32 against them to give him 82 points over a span of two games. Though Fischer’s offense received the brunt of the credit, Mattimore’s 22 points and Alastair Green’s 9, all of which coming in the fourth quarter, stood out as well.
