Both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams got a helping hand from unlikely places as they moved into respective shares of first place in League VIII. On Monday evening, the Southold girls’ basketball team, an opponent the Bears defeated by 25 on January 18, defeated previously unbeaten Pierson/Bridgehampton, 40-38. The loss by the Whalers allowed our girls to gain ground and move into a share of the league lead. The girls’ next game is tomorrow at home vs. Shelter Island @ 4:30pm.

Southold also aided our boys’ team this evening when they took down Greenport, the only remaining undefeated team in Suffolk County. The 49-45 upset allowed the 6-1 Bears to run down the 8-1 Porters. The boys’ next game is Thursday February 3 at Port Jeff @ 5:45pm.
