The Shrikes | Whitney (#10) and Wilson (Front, 3rd from left)

On this day 33 years ago…

In a memorable night out on tiny Shelter Island, the boys’ basketball team took down the Indians, 102-90, in the highest combined scoring output in Stony Brook basketball history. The Shrikes started fast, outscoring the islanders 21-14 in the first quarter but, after a spirited frame from the home team, led just 42-40 at the break. The Blue and White seized control of the game by outscoring Shelter Island 27-14 in the third, giving them a 15-point edge going into the fourth quarter.

The final frame was played at a torrid pace as both teams, incredibly, topped the 30-point mark in the quarter. The Indians won the battle 36-33, but ultimately lost the war by 12 points. It is not often that a high school team scores 90 points in a loss, but on this wild night the Shrikes proved to be a bit more potent. Dave Wilson was the leading scorer for the Brook with 28 points, while Mark Whitney, who won the New York State Cross Country Championship a little over a month earlier, finished with 25.
