In eerily similar fashion to the girls’ team, the boys’ cross country squad defeated Southold in the County Championship after falling to them earlier in the season. It was the second title of the three won by the Bears on this historic day along with the girls’ cross country and soccer teams.
The boys’ thirteenth Suffolk County title in program history may have also been their closest. When the race was over the Bears and Settlers were deadlocked in a 28-28 tie, requiring the officials to go to a tiebreaker. Proof that every member is vital to a team, the championship came down to the position of Stony Brook’s sixth man, freshman Darryl Baker, who placed ahead of Southold’s fifth and sixth runners to give the Blue and White the title. The championship win was Coach Jake Morley’s fourth to go along with a trio of victories from 2006-2008. With the victory, the boys earn a spot in next Saturday’s New York State Meet in Pawling, NY.
