In yesterday’s Suffolk County Class C County semifinal, the boys’ soccer team fell to Pierson, 0-1, in a hard-fought battle. It is never easy when a great season comes to a close, the saddest part being that the team striding off the field will never again be replicated. Each squad is a collection of personalities, a cast of characters you grow attached to over the course of a season. The team’s success this year was inextricably linked to the leadership of the senior class that over the last few years has contributed so much to the program.
Anuraag Sah – Our reliable outside midfielder has scored so many big goals in his three-year career that it is impossible to recount them all. His astonishing ball-control, that literally broke a defender’s ankle last year, his speed, and his clever left foot will be sorely missed next season. Above all, Anuraag played the game with passion and that made an impression on all who saw him play.
Wes Woodley – Filling the shoes of All-State keeper Pete Carmel was not going to be easy, but three years ago Woodley stepped in and has been a crucial piece of the program ever since. From saving penalty kicks, to elevating above the masses for a punch at a corner kick, to sacrificing his body on a goal-saving slide, Woodley has given his all in each game. His seven shutouts this season are just one shy of Jeremy Meserole’s school record from 1995.
Jon Wentling – Jon’s brand of soccer is tenacious. He has one speed: breakneck. There are times when he can single-handedly control the midfield with both his feet and his head. He never backs down from a challenge and his hustle galvanizes everyone he plays with.
Tyler Anderson – The word that comes to mind when you think of Tyler is “reliable.” It’s comforting seeing him in the backfield because he does not make a bad decision and his cannon of a right leg proves invaluable in our clearing game. Tyler also has a nose for the goal and on many occasions has come up with a timely score for the Blue and White.
PK Thorstenn – PK’s skill with the ball is remarkable, but it is his self-sacrifice that most contributed to the success of the Bears this season. PK gave up his spot at forward to shore up the defense and it paid dividends. He became our stopper and many would-be attackers were foiled along his left sideline.
Khoren Lawson – Khoren became a potent cog in our offense this season and, coupled with his knack for doing the intangibles, his presence on the field will be missed next fall. His blazing speed could both lead the fast-break and run down the opponent.
TJ Valet – Sean Barker was out with an injury for much of the season and TJ filled a crucial hole in our defense. TJ never takes a play off and his willingness to do anything to prevent a goal was vital to our success this season.
Sean Barker – Though Sean was limited in his playing time this season, he was still an essential part of the team. No one on the sidelines cheered louder or rooted harder for the Brook than this senior leader. When he was on the field, he was not tentative in his bulky knee brace, charging and slide-tackling and doing whatever was required of him. Every team needs someone like Sean.
Phil Gape – Phil was called upon in goal several times this season at critical moments and provided solid support of Woodley. He was always ready when called upon and made much of his opportunities when they were given to him.
Thank you class of 2011. You gave us some fantastic wins, you were a joy to watch, but most importantly, you wore the blue and white proudly and represented your school well. We’ll miss you all.
