The ’94 Bears | Kenney (2nd row, 2nd from left), Hughey (4th row, 6th from left)

On this day 16 years ago…

In the first clash of what has become a perennial rivalry, the football team met Port Jefferson in the 1st Annual Harbor Classic. The winner would have taken home the coveted clipper ship trophy, but there was no victor on this day as the Bears and Royals played to a 30-30 tie in a back-and-forth struggle. Ed Hughey had a monster game for the Brook, rushing for 126 yards on 22 carries and scoring a trio of touchdowns, but it was freshman quarterback Derek Kenney who seized control of the game for the Blue and White on a 3-yard sneak that put us up 30-24 with 2:54 remaining. Port Jeff came right back, scoring on a 34-yard strike with just 28 seconds left to knot the contest. The Royals had a chance to take the lead on the ensuing extra point kick, but the try missed short to seal the draw.
