Over the weekend, the sailing team won a fourth consecutive New York State Championship by out-dueling Canisius and West Irondequoit on the waters of Lake Ontario.
The Bears had two teams in the single-fleet event, which went off on Saturday amid shifting light winds and sunny skies. Mauro Gonzalez and Elaine Tian won the first four races of the day, then took runner-up in three in a row before closing their day with another 1st place finish, putting them atop the leaderboard after day one. Mairead Reitzel and Joshua Henson had four 3rd place finishes, three 4th place finishes, and a 5th place finish in the field of 10.
On Sunday, a dense fog delayed racing until 10:30am, when the fleet was finally able to leave the dock. However, only two races went off before the fog rolled back in, causing a 25-minute delay before racing was finally called. Gonzalez and Tian took 1st and 2nd in their two races to win the championship for the Bears with 14 points. Reitzel and Henson took 6th and 4th on Sunday to finish the event with 39 points and a 4th place overall finish.
