On Thursday afternoon, the girls’ lacrosse team avenged a 9-10 loss and played themselves back into the League Championship picture with a dominant 10-4 victory over Long Island Lutheran.
The Blue & White raced out to a 4-0 start in a blink, paced by a trio of scores from Mia Trama, and took a 4-1 edge into the second quarter. In the second, Ali Puopolo scored at the 7:56 mark before Natalia Pagano pushed the advantage to 6-1 with 4:24 left in the half. After LuHi netted an answer, Trama scored with just 17 ticks on the clock off of a dodge and snipe to the top shelf to give the Bears a 7-2 lead at the break.
In the third period, the Bears did not score until the final minute when they found the net twice on a falling-down shot by Mac Vesey with 53.8 remaining and a Pagano goal with 39.6 left, following a Puopolo draw control and a Trama assist. Despite the lack of offense early in the quarter, the Bears were able to extend their lead to 9-3 heading into the fourth, thanks to the outstanding netminding of Genevieve Rochlin. The freshman stoned a point-blank shot at the 10:30 mark and a free position try at 7:02 to keep LuHi at bay.
In the fourth, Rochlin continued to lead the way for the Bears with another free position save and a trio of stops right on the doorstep. LuHi did not score again until under a minute left, and Trama put the exclamation point on her five-goal effort by ripping the twine with just 0.7 remaining in the 10-4 win.
Trama added an assist to go along with her five scores. Pagano notched a goal and 2 assists, Puopolo 2 goals, Vesey 1 goal, and Sophia Dabbraccio 1 goal.
Pagano also highlighted the Morgan’s Message movement before the game in an effort to support and raise awareness for mental health for athletes.
