On Tuesday afternoon, the baseball team scored double-digit runs for the tenth time this season in an 11-4 victory over Calhoun.
The Bears scored in each of the first five innings to keep the Cougars behind all afternoon, and a trio of Blue & White pitchers never allowed the hosts’ offense to get rolling. In the top of the 1st, Larry Hotaling’s sacrifice fly gave the Bears their first run. In the 2nd, Shea Corona’s RBI single doubled the Bear advantage to 2-0. In the 3rd, a double from Hotaling followed a Mateo Lopez triple to give The Brook a 3-0 lead. A Juju Martinez sacrifice fly and Alex Baaden double each brought in runs as the Bears took a 5-0 lead.
Calhoun carved into their deficit with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the 3rd, but the Bears scored on three straight hits in the 4th to build a commanding margin. Aaron Artsen began the surge with a two-run single. Martinez followed with a double that brought Artsen all the way around from first. Corona capped the run with a single to plate Martinez and extend the Bear advantage to 9-2. In the 5th, an Anthony DeCesare sacrifice fly and Hotaling single each scored runs to give the Blue & White an 11-2 lead. Calhoun answered back for two runs in the bottom half, but it was not enough to threaten the Bears as the visitors wrapped up a dominant win.
Hotaling, Artsen, Martinez, and Corona paced the offense with 2 RBIs apiece. Nick Parker earned the win with 0 earned runs and 3 strikeouts over 2.1 innings of work.
