7 Records Fall at Easterns

Over the weekend, the swim team traveled to Lancaster, PA to compete in the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Franklin & Marshall College. The event is one of the premier private school meets in the country and has been held annually since 1935. It was the Bears’ fourth appearance at the event, including trips in 2019, 2022, and 2023. The event was canceled due to COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021.

Friday was a memorable day in the history of Stony Brook Swimming as five school records were broken a total of eight times.

The girls’ 200 medley relay team of Amelia Griffin, Kaitlyn Tse, Genevieve Rochlin, and Naomi Crane swam a 1:54.01 in prelims to break the mark of 1:56.84 set in 2021 by Griffin, Tse, Sofia Arrascue, and Ruth Crane. In the evening’s finals, they broke their own record with a 1:53.69 swim to finish 14th overall.

Tse broke her own record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:12.81, which she later broke in the finals with a 2:11.68 mark to take 18th overall.

Amelia Griffin re-write Madi Sargent’s 100 backstroke record of 1:01.99 from 2018 by touching the wall in 1:01.83. Crane broke the 50 free record with a 24.41 milestone.

The 200 free relay team of Tse, Victoria Mackay, Griffin, and Crane reset the 2019 time of 1:43.64, registered by Rebecca Crane, Ruth Crane, Sarah Vincent, and Madi Sargent with a 1:41.60 swim in prelims. They edged ahead of that time with a 1:41.24 in the finals to earn an 11th place finish.

Perhaps the highlight of the day was the performance of Gavin Paton, Chris Liu, Hugo MacDonald, and Sebastian Guadalupe-Pena, who swam a 1:42.69 in the finals of the 200 medley relay to finish 18th and break the 31-year-old mark of 1:43.67 laid down by the memorable All-American quad of Steve Meltzer, Jonathan Meltzer, Will Smith, and Jean Crousillat.

After a memorable Friday, the Bears still had two more records in the tank for Saturday.

Tse added a second individual record to her weekend performance with a 1:07.15 in the 100 breaststroke prelims, edging Amanda Shapiro’s 1:07.66 from 2002.

Crane capped the Bears’ memorable weekend with a 53.68 in the 100 free to eclipse Madi Sargent’s 53.75 from 2019.

The Bears now look ahead to this week’s 4th Annual NYSAIS Championships, where Tse will look to defend her State title in the 200 breaststroke.
