Yesterday evening, the girls’ basketball team clinched at least a share of a third consecutive PSAA regular season championship in a 53-26 victory over Martin Luther. The victory improved the Bears’ PSAA record to 9-0 with one game to play. A victory in Wednesday’s Senior Night match-up with Portledge would give them the undefeated outright title for a third straight year.
The Bears blitzed the Cougars in a 21-6 opening quarter behind 13 points from Meaghan Doherty. A pair of Payton Martin 3-pointers and five points from Abby Smith helped the Bears extend their lead to 35-17 at the half.
Doherty connected on two 3-pointers in the third quarter to help the Bears carry a 45-21 advantage into the final frame before they cruised to the win.
Doherty, who is currently #2 on the Long Island private school scoring list at 20.2 ppg, led all scorers with 24 points. Her 4 three-pointers upped her season total to 57, which is good enough for 3rd on all of Long Island. Martin (12), Cassandra Rohan (8), Smith (5), and Jocelyn McCrain (4) completed the Bears’ scoring.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday evening as they wrap up the regular season with a home match-up against Portledge on Senior Night.
