Yesterday evening, the boys’ basketball team traveled to Queens for a PSAA match-up with Martin Luther and returned to campus with a 99-44 win that upped their league record to 8-2.
While the final score was lopsided, the first 16 minutes of the game were anything but as the Bears took a slight 16-13 lead after the first quarter, thanks to eight points from Dylan Kopp. Alvin Zhou caught fire in the second quarter, splashing four 3-pointers and scoring 14 in the period, but the Cougars continued to hang around and trailed narrowly, 30-34 at the halftime break.
In the second half, the Bears found a gear that Luther could not match as they scored an astonishing 41 points in the third frame alone, behind 16 points from Kopp and 11 from Orlando Morris. Another 24 points in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach as the Bears outscored their hosts 65-14 over the final 16 minutes.
Kopp led all scorers with 24 points and did all of his damage in the first and third quarters. Morris was close behind with 23 points. Zhou (14), Nate Small (12), Randolph Logan (6), Jeremiah Coty (6), Jack Bunt (4), Fraysser Torres (4), Paul Coty (4), and Michael Xiang (2) provided the rest of a balanced attack.
The Bears are back in action this afternoon in a PSAA tilt at Knox, who received an honorable mention in this morning’s NYSSWA Class A poll.
