Yesterday afternoon, the boys’ basketball team improved to 7-1 in PSAA play with an 85-73 win over Waldorf at Island Garden. The surprisingly close margin was likely a case of looking past the Wolverines toward a key match-up with Long Island Lutheran this evening, as the Bears took down Waldorf in the season opener, 97-43. But The Brook did enough to get the win and to stay in the hunt for the regular season title.
The Bears edged Waldorf 19-17 in the first quarter behind 11 points from Randolph Logan, but lost the second frame 21-22 to lead by a narrow 40-39 margin at the half. Six different Bears scored in the second, but they could not do enough defensively to slow down their hosts.
The third quarter proved to be the difference as the Blue & White racked up 27 points to Waldorf’s 15, led by eight points from Dylan Kopp, to carry a 67-54 lead into the final frame. Waldorf showed no quit despite trailing by 13 entering the fourth, and won the period 19-18.
Kopp, who came into the game as the Long Island private school leader in points per game with 24.1, tallied 25 to lead the Bears. Logan (19), Orlando Morris (17), Paul Coty (10), Jeremiah Coty (6), Fraysser Torres (2), Alvin Zhou (2), and Michael Xiang (2) rounded out the Bear attack.
The Bears are back in action this evening in a big PSAA match-up at LuHi.
