With the basketball season nearing its midpoint, Bears on both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are ranked among the best scorers on Long Island.
The girls are off to a 10-1 start, the team’s best since the 2009-10 squad went 19-1 over their first 20 games. Meaghan Doherty has been one of the team’s leaders on both ends of the floor, as well as with her effort and attitude. She is currently tied for #2 on the Long Island private school scoring list, which includes all NYSAIS and CHSAA players, and is #10 overall on the island at 21.0 points per game. She scored a season-high 33 in a lopsided win over Southampton, the highest single-game total in the private schools this year. Her 31 three-pointers also lead the island, with Darrian Jackson the next closest at 23.
Cassandra Rohan has been a force in the paint for the Bears, recording eight double-doubles in the Bears’ first 11 games. She is currently #7 on the Long Island private school list at 16.2 ppg. Her 28-point total vs. Solomon Schechter is the #4 single-game total among private schools this season.
8th-grader Abby Smith has been a key cog in the Bear offense, handling the bulk of the point guard responsibilities and showing poise and a high basketball IQ. Her 8.3 ppg is #23 on the LI private school scoring list.
