Big 4th Leads Bears Past Phantoms

Rohan scores vs. Kew-Forest (PC: Jed Lazzeri)

Yesterday evening, the girls’ basketball team extended the best undefeated start in team history with a 63-47 non-league win at Bayport-Blue Point that improved their overall record to 9-0 (4-0).

The Bears led after every quarter of the 16-point victory, but the game was much closer than the final score indicated. The Bears took a 17-15 lead after the first quarter behind eight points from Meaghan Doherty, including two 3-pointers. Cassandra Rohan and Abby Smith added four points each. The Bears scored only eight points in the second, fueled by a pair of 3-pointers from Smith, but it was enough to hold onto a 27-24 lead at the half, thanks to their active defense.

The game remained close in the third quarter, but the Bears would ride their dynamic duo to a comfortable victory. Doherty and Rohan, who were both named to Newsday‘s Top 100 list last week, combined for 30 second-half points, scoring all but four of the Bears’ tally over the final 16 minutes. In the third, Rohan scored eight points while Doherty added five, including another 3-pointer. Payton Martin scored four as The Brook took a 44-41 edge into the fourth.

The final frame was all Stony Brook as Rohan and Doherty scored all 17 of the team’s points while the defense held the Phantoms to just six to power their way to victory. Rohan scored 10 in the fourth alone, while Doherty’s seven points included her Long Island-leading 24th three-pointer.

Rohan led all scorers with 25 to go along with 18 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Doherty dropped in 23 to go along with 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals. Both Bears are currently ranked in the top 10 on the Long Island private school scoring list, with Doherty slotted at #4 at 20.0 ppg and Rohan at #7 with 16.7 ppg.

Smith added 11 points with 3 assists and 1 rebound, and Martin scored 4 points with 4 rebounds and an assist.

The Bears are back on the court tomorrow evening in a PSAA match-up at Martin Luther.
