This afternoon, two Bears made history by becoming the first girls’ basketball players to be named to the Newsday Top 100 list. Senior Meaghan Doherty and junior Cassandra Rohan were included among the best players in the public, private, and Catholic school leagues. They were the only players selected to the list for the PSAA.
Their historic distinction is less a reflection of the quality of our girls’ program–as Niamh Scanlon, Beth Felix, Brannon Burke, Danielle Spiliotis, Kristyn Dunleavy, Sadie Singer, and Rebecca Fischer were certainly worthy of inclusion over the years–and more a reflection of the lack of coverage smaller schools tend to receive.
Last year, Doherty averaged 14.1 points and five assists at Kennedy Catholic before transferring to The Brook this fall. Newsday added, “She is a dangerous outside shooter who also sees the floor well.” She currently leads all Long Island shooters with 17 three-pointers and is averaging 20.0 points per game through the first six games.
Rohan averaged 10.2 points and 10 rebounds at Sachem East last year before joining the Bears. Newsday added, “Rohan is tough to contain in the paint.” In the Bears’ first six games she has recorded four double-doubles, including a 28-point, 14-rebound effort against Solomon Shechter in the season opener.
The duo has led The Brook to a 6-0 start and an average margin of victory of 48.5 points. They return to the court this evening in a non-league match-up with Mattituck on the Swanson hardwood.
