On Saturday afternoon, the girls’ basketball team improved to 5-0 on the season with a 72-22 non-league victory over Class B Southampton on the Swanson hardwood. It’s the third time the Bears have topped 70 points this year, a feat they accomplished just once all of last season despite going undefeated in league play on the way to the PSAA Championship. Their average margin of victory through five games is 51.2 points.

The Bears once again rode a dominant first quarter on the way to a lopsided win. In their five 1st quarters this season, they have not scored less than 22 points and have finished the first eight minutes with an average margin of 22.2 points. On Saturday, they outscored the Mariners 23-9 before further expanding their lead to 43-14 at the half. A 20-6 third quarter put the game away.

Meaghan Doherty lit up the scoreboard with 33 points behind 5 three-pointers. She added 5 rebounds and 3 assists. The senior is currently third among Long Island private school players with an average of 20.6 points per game, despite sitting for large swaths of each game due to the Bears’ dominant play. Doherty leads all public and private school shooters on Long Island with 16 three-pointers.

She was complimented by Cassandra Rohan (12 pts, 15 reb, 1 ast), Jocelyn McCrain (10 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast), Abby Smith (9 pts, 2 reb, 1 ast), Payton Martin (3 pts, 1 reb, 1 ast), Scarlett Davey (3 pts, 1 reb, 1 ast), and Mairead Retizel (2 pts, 2 reb).

The Bears are back in action this afternoon in a PSAA match-up at Solomon Schecter, who they beat 74-35 two weeks ago.
