Tennis Sweeps SIA to Claim 6th Straight Title

Since the Bears joined the Private Schools Athletic Association in the fall of 2018, the girls’ tennis team has put together an impressive string of dominance, engineering five straight undefeated League Championship seasons and winning four tournament titles in their first five years. Yesterday, they continued their dynastic run in a doubleheader sweep of Staten Island Academy that earned them a sixth straight League Championship, 32 consecutive league wins, and a 5-0 record with one match to play in the regular season.

The matches began on the outdoor Hollis Tennis Courts, but when the skies opened up, the teams hustled off the hardcourt, into buses, and down the road to the indoor clay courts at Long Island Health & Racquet to complete the contests.

In the first match, the Bears earned a 5-0 sweep behind singles victories from Alanna Wu (6-1, 6-2), Isabel Guo (6-1, 7-5), and Rania Lajmi (6-3, 6-0). On the doubles side, Ali Cristobal and Sarah Arrieta (6-0, 6-0) and Brianna Shinin and Ava Birgeles (6-0, 6-1) completed the sweep with a strong showing.

The Bears made it a Senior Day to remember by completing a doubleheader sweep with another 5-0 result. Arrieta (6-0, 6-0), Cristobal (6-1, 6-0), and Guo (3-6, 6-1, 10-2) swept the singles matches while Mia Lauri and Jayee Fu (6-2, 7-6 (7-3)) and Shinin and Birgeles (6-1, 6-4) rounded out the victory at doubles.

The Bears will look to close out a sixth straight undefeated league season and clinch the outright title this afternoon in a match-up at Portledge.
