The 2005 softball team

On this day 13 years ago, the softball team earned a 1-0 victory over Hampton Bays behind 19 strikeouts from Juanita Gonzalez.

Gonzalez allowed just two hits and a walk over seven innings, but the Bears failed to give her run support until two outs remained in the final inning. Sarah Spalholz got the rally started with a single, then advanced to second on an infield single from Sara Celikoyar. Gonzalez drew a walk to load the bases before Spalholz came home with the winning run on a passed ball.

Gonzalez’s 19 Ks gave her 1,010 for her incredible career. She would go on to fan 1,153 batters to break the Long Island record.
