Whitney pushes the ball vs. Southold in ’82

On this day 36 years ago, the girls’ basketball team topped Portledge, 42-37.

After a low-scoring, 3-3 first quarter, the Shrikes fell behind 18-13 at the half. They carved into the lead in the third frame with a 14-10 effort, but were still behind entering the final period.

The Shrikes trailed 27-28 at the start of the fourth quarter, but Laura Whitney drained a jump shot with 5:29 left that gave the Blue and White a 31-30 lead they would not relinquish.

Anne Larson led the way with a team-high 17 points while Sara Nyberg scored 10 and Elaine Scanlon added 8.
