On this day 18 years ago, the girls’ basketball team topped Pierson in overtime, 43-37, thanks to some late-game heroics.
Michelle Spurlock hit a 12-foot jumper with 17 seconds left, the Bears’ only points in a taut fourth quarter, to knot the game at 35-35 and push it to an extra period. Gwen Powlison’s jumper gave the Brook the lead for good at 39-37 and the Bears hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Michelle Spurlock led the Bears with 14 points, including four in overtime, while Brooke Meserole (9), Powlison (8), and Carolyn Gilroy (7) helped carry the scoring load.
The Bears would go on to win a fourth consecutive League Championship later that season.
