On this day 19 years ago, the boys’ basketball team overcame the flu and Shelter Island in a 78-42 win. Here is the recap from Newsday:
The flu bug has hit Stony Brook's boys' basketball team hard. How hard? Even coach Mike Hickey had to sit out yesterday's game against Shelter Island. But behind assistant athletic director Brooks Johnson - and with only three subs on the bench - the Bears made a season-high 12 three-pointers to beat Shelter Island, 78-42, in a League VIII game.David Marvin had 23 points (five three-pointers), and Sam Sherman added 22 (five treys) for the Bears (4-3). Shelter Island is 0-5. "This game was supposed to be played Tuesday, but we had it rescheduled," Johnson said. "We wouldn't have had enough players, but the kids jelled together well. Especially missing one starter [David Addison] and with just three subs on the bench."
The Bears jumped out to a 20-8 lead after the first quarter and took a 41-19 lead into the break on the way to a dominant win. Seth Kuhn added 18 points.
