Yesterday afternoon, the boys’ swim team narrowly lost to a talented Sayville/Bayport-Blue Point squad, 42-52. Despite the loss, the Bears won four of the eight individual events and one of the three relays.
Oliver Griffin paced the field in the 200 individual medley (2:12.67), Hunter Markowitz took the 100 freestyle (49.65), and Spencer Griffin won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.71) while Spencer Griffin, Markowitz, Markus Calero, and Henry Bi joined forces to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.34).
But the highlight of the meet was Markowitz’s victory in the 50 freestyle (22.50) that broke Jonathan Meltzer’s 25-year-old school record set in 1992. Meltzer was an All-American for the Bears in 1993 and 1994 as a part of the record-setting 200 freestyle relay team.
The Bears return to the pool after Christmas in a home meet with Deer Park on January 10.
