On this day 20 years ago, the boys’ basketball team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 62-54 victory over Southold. Here is the recap of the game from Newsday:
Stony Brook boys' basketball coach Mike Hickey hates to think where his team would be without Jonathan Marvin."Without him we'd be a .500 team," Hickey said. "With him we're undefeated."Marvin, a 5-7 senior, connected on seven three-pointers, four of which came in the first quarter, and scored 29 points to lead Stony Brook (4-0) to a 62-54 win over Southold yesterday in a League VIII game. Marvin added eight rebounds and six steals, while David Marvin, Jon's younger brother, scored all eight of his points in the second half."He's explosive," Hickey said of Jon. "The game could've gotten out of hand very early, but he kept us in it. He just had a stellar game. He's just a level above a good high school player."Jon Marvin scored nine of his points during a 16-6 run that gave Stony Brook a 46-33 lead with 1:40 left in the third quarter.
