The historic 2017 swimming season continued on Saturday at the Suffolk County Championships, hosted by Suffolk Community College–Brentwood.

The Bears turned in five season best performances and rewrote two school records as they tested their mettle against Suffolk’s best. Rachel Crane, Rebecca Crane, Madi Sargent, and Yesenia McKee partnered to reset their own school record in the 200 medley relay, becoming the first Stony Brook quartet to break the two-minute barrier. They joined forces again in the 400 freestyle relay, taking 6th overall and breaking the school record set by Rachel, Rebecca, and Ruthie Crane and McKee at the League Championships last week.

In the individual events, Sargent continued her sensational eighth-grade season by taking 3rd in the County in the 500 freestyle (5:19.08) and 7th in the 100 butterfly with a season best performance of 1:00.55 that was just off the school record pace of Colleen Smith’s 1:00.01 set in 1988.

Rebecca Crane took 10th in the 50 freestyle in a season best time of 25.76, improving on her 15th place finish from a year ago. She also turned in a season best time in the 100 butterfly (1:03.26) to nab 17th.

In the final meet of her impressive career, Rachel Crane took 13th in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.89, improving on her 15th place finish from last year. She leaves the pool for the final time as the owner of our school record in the 100 backstroke (1:02.54) and with a hand in all three relay school records.

Despite having only four participants, the Bears finished 12th out of 28 teams thanks to the outstanding performances of Rachel, Rebecca, Madi, and Yesenia.

Madi will move on to the New York State Championships next weekend in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. She is the youngest representative headed to states from Section XI.
