On this day 36 years ago, Mark Whitney ’78 finished 12th at the ACC Cross Country Championship to help the University of North Carolina earn a runner-up finish. Whitney covered the Duke University course in 31:09 as the Tar Heels finished 2nd in the conference, behind only Clemson University.

Head coach Don Lockerbie ’75 and Whitney, the team captain, led the Tar Heels to a 3-0-1 record during the regular season and a ranking as high as #13 in America.
