On Saturday, the volleyball team won the 3rd Annual Pierson Volleyball Tournament, then journeyed back to Sag Harbor to sweep the Whalers on Monday. Here is a recap of the matches from Gavin Menu for SagHarborExpress.com.

Whalers Fall to Stony Brook as Winning Streak Ends

A former Whaler has proven to be a thorn in the side of the Pierson/Bridgehampton girls’ volleyball team.

Liz Robbins, a Stony Brook sophomore and Sag Harbor native who once patrolled the court for Pierson as an eighth-grader, led the Bears to a 3-0 victory at Pierson on Monday. Stony Brook, which came from behind to beat Pierson in the Suffolk County Class C final last fall, won the first two sets in convincing fashion (25-16, 25-17) before holding on to win the deciding third set, 25-21.

After starting the season 3-0 in League VIII, the defending league champion Whalers got all they could handle against Stony Brook on Monday and in Pierson’s third annual Varsity Volleyball Tournament held at the high school on Saturday morning. After playing two preliminary matches, Pierson faced Stony Brook to determine who would face Southampton in the final match. Stony Brook won and went on to defeat Southampton in the final, as Pierson finished third.

A total of seven teams competed with Hampton Bays, Greenport/Southold, Mercy, and Port Jefferson joining Stony Brook, Southampton, and Pierson.
