Washington Shines in Rutgers Debut

Washington Rutgers
Washington (#88) trails the play

On Friday night, Jerome Washington ’12 made his debut at tight end for the Rutgers University football team in a 30-14 loss to #8 Washington. The former Bear led all receivers with 6 catches for 36 yards, while earning three first downs and catching the ball all six times he was targeted with a long play of 11 yards.

The Scarlet Knights went into the half trailing the reigning Pac-12 Champions just 10-7. Rutgers never went away in the second half and, while the Huskies came away with a victory, the Scarlet Knights’ performance was universally praised. Jerome Washington’s performance was a big reason why.

It is clear that the tight end position, and Washington in particular, could be a focal point for the Rutgers offense this season after tight ends caught 16 total passes for the Scarlet Knights one year ago.

Washington and Rutgers return to action on Saturday at home vs. Eastern Michigan.

If the Scarlet Knights continue to play the way they did against the defending Pac-12 champions, they are going to surprise some teams.
