Since jumping 7′ 2.5″ at the St. Anthony’s Invitational last Saturday, notoriety has come swiftly to Jyles Etienne. His feat was profiled by MileSplit and he earned Newsday Athlete of the Week honors, a feat last accomplished by a Stony Brook athlete in 2004.
The commotion was heard all the way across the Caribbean as Jyles’ hometown paper, The Nassau Guardian, picked up the story. The Bahamas’ oldest newspaper (it will turn 173 in November) ran stories after Jyles became the United States indoor leader and after he earned the Athlete of the Week distinction, earning the senior front page ink each time.
