On Friday evening, a very special event unfolded in the Hollis Student Center.
Sophomore Beth Felix was celebrated as a one of only 25 nationwide finalists for the U.S. Army – Pro Football Hall of Fame Award for Excellence that recognizes outstanding work in the classroom, on the playing field, and in the community. Beth maintains a 4.0 GPA in the classroom, she anchored the defense of the girls’ soccer team, and averaged 18.9 points and 6.7 steals per game as the captain of the girls’ basketball team. But Beth’s most remarkable work is seen in her community service.
Prior to moving to Stony Brook with her family this fall, Beth spent three years volunteering at the Winner’s Circle Basketball Academy in Johnstown, PA. During over her over 300 volunteer hours spent on summers, weekends, and holidays, Beth helped young basketball players grow in their skill and confidence. Beyond that, she founded the Greater Johnstown Community YMCA junior leadership committee which helped raise tens of thousands of dollars in donations for community resources. In addition, she helped with education clinics for children in the community that fostered such things as positive relationships with law enforcement and leadership seminars with guest speakers, including a professional football player. When she noticed that some children could not afford to participate in certain community programs, she coordinated a food drive to raise funds for free programming. There are those who talk about leadership and there are those who act out leadership. Beth is an example of a true leader.
Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk was on campus to say a few words on behalf of Beth and present her with her award. In addition, Beth and her entire family are invited to this year’s Hall of Fame Enshrinement in Canton, OH this August where the winner of the Award for Excellence will be revealed.
