This afternoon, the boys’ tennis team improved to 4-2 on the season with a 6-1 victory over Longwood. The Bears narrowly edged the Lions, 4-3, on March 21, and early on in today’s match appeared to be following a similar script.
The Bears’ four singles players won their first sets while the three doubles tandems dropped theirs. After 1st and 2nd singles lost their second sets, it looked as though the Brook was headed for a close finish with the Lions. Instead, the Bears dominated the second half of the match. Steven Ou (6-1, 2-6, 6-4) battled back for a three-set win at 1st singles, while freshman Brandon Gicquel (6-3, 4-6, 6-2) showed similar grit in his three-set victory at 2nd singles. John Wei (6-4, 6-2) and Jim Li (6-1, 6-2) gave the Bears a clean sweep at singles.
On the doubles side, the 1st doubles pair of Thomas Lawton and Wensan Yin (6-7, 6-3, 6-0) shook off a close loss in their first set to take 12 of the next 15 games and the win. Ben Tom and Bryant Kang (6-7, 6-4, 6-3) also dropped a first set tiebreaker, only to come back with a vengeance in the final two sets for the win at 3rd doubles.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday in a non-league match-up at the Knox School.
