He finally did it.
On Saturday, Jyles Etienne jumped into the record books at the BAAA CARIFTA Games Trials after clearing the coveted 7-foot height for the first time in competition.
The Indiana-bound senior leapt over 7′ 1.75″ (2.18m) to eclipse the Suffolk County record of 7′ 1″ set in 1979 by Shoreham-Wading River’s Dave DeVito. The record-breaking leap did not come without controversy. After clearing the height, Etienne was told that the jump would not stand due to a time penalty as he had not jumped within the 60-second time frame from the moment he was called.
His coach protested the disqualification and Etienne continued to jump under protest. After the completion of the event the protest was upheld and the jump was deemed legal.
Jyles’ jump is currently the third-highest mark in America this season and the fifth-best in the world for jumpers under 20-years-old. It is also the third-highest jump in New York State history. The record jump of 7′ 3″, set in 2001 by Albany Academy’s Dan Olsen, is within reach with over two months left in the season.
Etienne will take flight next on Thursday afternoon in a dual meet vs. Greenport.
