Malmstrom 1967
Malmstrom’s senior portrait

On this day 50 years ago, Dick Malmstrom notched a two-hit shutout to lead the baseball team to a 2-0 win in their season opener. Alan Swanson and Stephen Clemens provided the RBIs in the Blue and White win.

Malmstrom’s opening day win was just the first stellar performance in a remarkable season for the senior and his teammates. The Blue and White would go on to finish 17-2 and win the school’s only Ivy League Championship in baseball. The Brookers’ ace finished his campaign with 10 wins and only one loss, including a one-hit shutout against Horace Mann. He never yielded more than two earned runs in any of his eleven starts and in 83 innings gave up only seven earned runs (.084 per inning) and 35 hits (0.42 per inning) while striking out 108 (1.3 per inning) finishing with a team best 0.76 earned run average.
