The 1946 football team that won the school’s first Ivy League title

On this day 72 years ago, the Stony Brook School joined the Ivy Preparatory School League, the school’s first athletic affiliation.

Stony Brook School became a member of the newly organized Ivy Prep School League here today. With delegates of six New York, Brooklyn, and Long Island prep schools in attendance, the new loop was formed also to include St. Paul's of Garden City, Adelphi Academy and Poly Prep of Brooklyn, and Horace Mann and Trinity of New York. Hollis S. "Babe" Spotts, director of athletics at Adelphi, was named the first president of the league.

The Blue and White would remain in the Ivy League for 29 years, winning 49 team championships and 125 individual championships over that span. The cross country and track programs, led by the legendary Marvin Goldberg, became dynasties as the Brook took home 15 consecutive cross country titles and 12 straight track titles.

As the population swelled on Long Island and suburban developments melted out from New York City, it became harder to travel to places like Poly Prep and Horace Mann for afternoon games. As a result, in the fall of 1973, the school made the move to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, where we have remained ever since.
