The boys’ badminton team improved to 2-0 on the season this afternoon with a 6-3 victory over Miller Place, the Bears’ first over the Panthers since our program began in 2015.
David Choi battled back to win his first singles match after dropping the first set, 9-15, taking the final two, 15-9, 15-6. Haban Weon (15-8, 15-5) and Jerry Liu (15-9, 15-4) swept their matches at second and third singles before TIger Sun showed his grit in a three-set match. He dropped set one 15-9, but came back to win the final two rounds, 15-13, 15-12.
On the doubles side, David Wang and Jack Yu won their first match at second doubles, 17-14, 15-4. The fourth doubles tandem of Sam Wong and David Chen rounded out the 6-3 victory with a 15-8, 15-9 victory.
The Miller Place program looms large in the history of badminton and American team sports. The Panthers did not lose a match between 1973 and April 12, 2005, a stretch of 32 years and 504 consecutive wins. Their run is the greatest in team sports history, evidenced by their place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The season is young, but the Bears are one of just three unbeaten teams in the 10-team league along with Smithtown East (2-0) and Half Hollow Hills (1-0). The Bears will face off on Thursday at home against Half Hollow Hills.
