B Basketball 2017 Greenport
Coach Mike Hickey and captains Brandon Providence & Mac Bohuny show off the spoils of a 5th straight title

Last night, the boys’ basketball team earned a fifth consecutive Suffolk County Championship in a 49-35 upset win over #1-seeded Greenport. Only three other teams in the history of Suffolk County have won five straight titles. Here is the recap of the game from iLuvBBall.com.

Stony Brook 5-Peats as Suffolk Class C Champions

Greenport was the favorite going into the Class C Championship games, having beaten Stony Brook twice during the regular season, but everyone knows the saying, “It’s hard to beat a team three times in one season.”

Stony Brook opened up the game in a diamond-1 defense, face-guarding Greenport’s sensational freshman Ahkee Anderson. This greatly disrupted Greenport’s half court offense as Greenport would not score their first points of the game until 3:30 left in the first quarter. Stony Brook used their length and size to score in the paint, giving them the 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, made field goals were hard to come by as both teams continued to battle on the defensive end. Greenport’s full court press tried to slow down and disrupt Stony Brook, but was unable to force turnovers, in part to Stony Brook precision ball movement. Stony Brook’s diamond-1 defense was key as they took a 20-12 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Greenport’s big man Julian Swan had to sit due to foul trouble. This helped Stony Brook’s Mac Bohuny, as he was able to attack the basket and score eight of his game-high 19 points in the third quarter, giving Stony Brook the 33-21 lead going into the fourth.

Greenport looked to chip away at the lead and get back in the game, thanks in part to baskets by Brandon Clark and Ahkee Anderson which cut the lead to seven, but that’s as close as Greenport would get. Out of a timeout, Stony Brook was able to break the press and find big man Jyles Etienne, who finished with a thunderous and-1 dunk. Stony Brook’s Brandon Providence knocked down foul shots at the end of the game to seal the victory for Stony Brook, who have won the Class C championship five years in a row.
