Last night, the boys’ basketball team earned a fifth consecutive Suffolk County Championship in a 49-35 upset win over #1-seeded Greenport. Only three other teams in the history of Suffolk County have won five straight titles. Here is the recap of the game from George Faella of Southold Local.
Greenport Championship Run Ends in Stunning Loss to Stony Brook
Greenport’s run to the top was stopped by Stony Brook in a 49-35 upset loss in the Class C championship at Suffolk County Community College yesterday in Selden.
Stony Brook, which had lost both previous games against Greenport this season, shut down the Porters’ offense at all angles, blocking shots, causing errant passes and forcing quick, missed shots. The baskets that Greenport scored were quick, thread the needle passes down low into the paint. Stony Brook forwards Jyles Etienne and Mac Bohuny blocked shot after shot, keeping the usually high-scoring Greenport team to a season low of just 35 points.
The Porters, who had a great season, were stunned by the tough loss. Stony Brook moves on to face Bridgehampton at SCCC/Brentwood tomorrow at 5:00pm.
