Girls’ Soccer Edges Knights

Yesterday afternoon, the girls’ soccer team earned a tough, 1-0, victory over visiting Smithtown Christian for their 10th straight win over the Knights dating back to 2011.

The Bears were caught by the Knights’ crafty offside trap several times early on, but Beth Felix broke through less than five minutes into the game by knifing her way through the top-heavy defense, forcing the keeper to come off of her line, then dribbling past the keeper and finishing on an open net for what would prove to be the game-winning goal. Minutes later a pair of eighth-graders nearly doubled the lead when Madison Logan gave a perfect pass through the box to Caroline Maglione who banged a shot off of the left post.

The Bears had several other scoring opportunities, including another fine shot from Maglione and a gorgeous strike from Logan late in the second half, but Smithtown’s impressive keeper was up to both challenges.

The excellent defense of Alyssa Martinez, Rachel Leccese, Beth Felix, and Donna Sanders, coupled with the goaltending of Morgan Pius and Ella Simmons, ensured that the lone goal stood up.
