Yesterday afternoon, the boys’ soccer team earned a second straight playoff berth with a 5-1 victory at Southold. With the victory, the Bears improved to 7-3 on the season, the most wins for the team since the 2010 squad went 10-4-1. The Bears will have a chance to exceed that win number with three regular season games to go and the playoffs ahead.

The victory was also significant because it marked the Bears’ first season sweep of the Settlers since the 2002 squad, led by Leon DeLalio, Scott Heinze, Doug Hoffman, and Brendan Penn, dispatched their east end rivals by scores of 2-0 and 1-0. The Brook beat Southold, 6-0, back on Sept. 8.

Once again it was Alvaro Martinez Torres leading the way for the Bears, scoring two goals and adding an assist. The Spaniard has scored at least two goals in each of the Bears’ victories and is the third-highest scorer in Suffolk County despite missing a game and a half with a rolled ankle. With at least four games to go, he is two goals away from tying Robbie Marvin’s 1994 school record of 20 goals in a season.

David Choi, Caleb Lindo, and Haban Weon also added goals for the Brook who built a 3-0 lead at the half before sealing the win with two second half goals. Owen Sobel (2), Gazie Moghalu, and Caleb Spreckles registered assists.

The Bears return to action tonight at 7:30pm in a huge home match-up with rival, Pierson. The match will go a long way toward determining playoff seeding.
