The volleyball team wasn’t the only Stony Brook squad to edge Mercy, 3-2, on Friday.

The girls’ soccer team needed overtime, but outlasted the Monarchs, 3-2, after 100 minutes of play. It was the Bears’ first victory of the season in a difficult league that features several Class B schools, including Mercy.

Ella Simmons got the scoring started with a strike in the 38th minute. With 18 minutes left and the score tied at 1-1, Madison Logan gave the Bears the lead when she found the back of the net after receiving a beautiful pass off the heel from Anna Ramstrom. The Monarchs equalized late to send the match into overtime, but in the first extra period Donna Sanders scored an unassisted goal to give the Brook the lead for good.

Eighth-grader Sophia DiLavore was outstanding in goal, making 15 saves to earn her first varsity win. The defense was anchored by the excellent play of Alyssa Martinez and Jessica Nwachukwu.
