On this day 30 years ago, the football squad opened the season with a thrilling one-point victory over Wheatley. Here is the write-up of the game from the following day’s New York Times.
Stony Brook Edges Wheatley
Jordan Nixon completed 9 of 18 passes and threw for two touchdowns and Sung Koh, the halfback, scored on a 62-yard touchdown run in the second quarter as The Stony Brook School defeated Wheatley, 21-20, in an Island Football Conference game at Stony Brook yesterday. With the season-opening victory, the Shrikes equaled their victory total of last season, when the team compiled a 1-7 record.
“The key to victory really was Nixon,” said coach Bill Copeland of Stony Brook. “He kept us in the game with his passing at times when we could have been out of it.”
