The first New York State Sportswriters Association poll of the season came out this morning and our boys’ soccer team is ranked #4 in New York’s Class C thanks to two convincing opening week wins.
The Bears dispatched Greenport, 5-2, in torrential rains on Tuesday before unleashing a 6-0 pounding on Southold, a perennial Class C power and winners of the last three Suffolk County titles.
The NYSSWA has gaps in their records, but this is likely the highest New York State ranking for boys’ soccer since 1998, a season in which they won the Class D Southeast Regional Title. They are joined in the rankings by fellow Section XI team, Pierson/Bridgehampton, slotted at #7.
In the week ahead the Bears have just one game against league and class rival, Port Jeff, whom the Bears handled twice last year by scores of 10-0 and 6-0.
